中華料理萬彩 帯広店
A popular restaurant group with three locations in Tokachi, “Chinese Restaurant Mansai.”
Authentic Chinese by Chinese chefs teases the appetite with its aromas and has earned many devoted fans. In March this year, the Memuro location opened to long lines from day one.
This time we visited the Obihiro branch for lunch. Despite being a weekday, the space buzzed pleasantly, and we were seated right away in a calm atmosphere.
Lunch sets include a main with salad, soup, and zha cai—excellent value. The à-la-carte selection is also extensive—you’ll be spoiled for choice.
After much deliberation, we chose the “Mansai Yakisoba Lunch.” A generous mound of piping-hot sauce covers crunchy vegetables and plenty of seafood. There’s even a big piece of karaage atop the salad! At ¥1,380 for this volume, the value is outstanding.
With both table and counter seating, solo diners can also feel at ease. If you’re thinking, “I want a solid meal today,” this satisfying lunch is for you.

中華食事処 孫悟空
A well-kept secret among Chinese cuisine lovers: “Son Goku.”
You’re greeted by friendly staff and treated to authentic Chinese dishes in a cozy space.
The chef, trained in hotels and elsewhere, showcases Hokkaido- and Tokachi-sourced ingredients.
Sweet-and-sour pork made with Honbetsu haskap (tang cu rou) is especially popular. The menu is extensive and ideal for lunch, dinner, and takeout. Same-day reservations are OK for the family party set, and there’s also a set for roasting their secret-sauce marinated char siu at home.
They also cater to reservation-only course meals and banquets, suitable for small to large groups.Even though it was nearly full at lunch, the aromas from the kitchen kept anticipation high while we waited.
We ordered the “Variety Set” on this visit. A generous lineup of appetizers, salad, shrimp in chili sauce, boiled dumplings, mapo tofu, spring rolls, fried chicken, ramen, fried rice, and coffee or sherbet. All for just ¥1,200—fantastic value!
Every dish is cooked to order by the chef, so everything arrives piping hot. The spring rolls and fried chicken are ultra-crispy, the ramen has a nostalgic soy-sauce flavor, and the fried rice is delightfully fluffy and dry. While single-dish rice and noodle options are plentiful, the Variety Set is perfect for those who want to sample “a little of everything.” With so many flavors in one go, it’s also a great choice for first-timers.

ラーメン・中華 あじ福 東店
Known as the birthplace of “Chuka Chirashi,” “Ramen & Chinese Ajifuku.”
In 1967, the founder began serving a staff-meal recipe from his ryotei days at his own shop—what became today’s Obihiro specialty, Chuka Chirashi.
We visited at lunchtime on a weekday.
The restaurant was packed with office workers, but we were lucky to grab an open seat without waiting.
All dishes are adjustable: large portions for +¥100 and small portions for −¥200.Rice dishes and yakisoba are also available for takeout. Many customers at the tables were ordering ramen.
We’ll introduce the signature Chuka Chirashi later—this time we had Tenshinhan (crab omelet rice). An irresistibly glossy look: soft, fluffy eggs lavishly coated in a tangy, savory sauce.
The set includes takuan pickles and Chinese soup, making for a very satisfying portion. Service is speedy too—great for workday lunch breaks.

Three Splendid Chinese Dinner Spots in Obihiro/Tokachi
美珍樓
When it comes to Chinese in Obihiro, “Bichinro” is synonymous.
Founded in 1966, it inherited its name from “Bichinro,” once a sister restaurant to the venerable “Manchinro” and “Heichinro” of Yokohama Chinatown.
Guests span all ages, and it’s beloved for “special occasions” like anniversaries or gatherings with friends.
The kitchen is led by a team of over ten professionals, upholding a strictly handmade philosophy. With fresh, safe ingredients and meticulous handwork, the dishes are elevated into authentic Chinese cuisine. Among them, very few places nationwide make 100% of their dim sum by hand on site.
Tradition, technique, and an unwavering commitment to “handmade” live here.
After the 2023 renewal, the dining room evokes “a metropolitan restaurant.” From the open kitchen, you can watch the chefs at work and hear the clang of woks and sizzle of oil—the live ambience is thrilling.
Pictured is the popular poached chicken, Bai Qie Ji, showcasing moist texture and pure chicken umami. Other standouts include luxurious crab fried rice, fragrant scallion noodles, and ham sui gok (deep-fried glutinous dumplings) with a crisp shell and chewy center—each plate shines with craftsmanship.Reviews rave “everything is delicious” and “the best in Obihiro without a doubt.” Lunchtime often gets crowded, so going early is recommended.
Skillful artisanship and assured flavor—meals here make everyday life feel just a bit special.

“Tokachi Chinese Kakemura” offers Chinese cuisine highlighting local ingredients.
For 28 years since opening, they’ve earned a reputation for dishes using abundant local produce. With a commitment to traceable ingredients from known producers, they deliver the deliciousness of Tokachi with peace of mind.
They also sell shumai, gyoza, and spring rolls at the shop and online so those who can’t make it to Obihiro can still enjoy Tokachi’s flavors. They actively participate in department-store pop-ups and events outside Hokkaido, expanding nationwide.
The drink list is broad, and a unique highlight is Japanese sake curated by local liquor shop “Kumada Shoten” to pair with the food.
A signature dish is “Shirayuki Fried Rice”—a gentle, comforting plate draped with a snow-white egg sauce.
Another emerging specialty is the “Soup Mapo.” Created to become a new Obihiro soul food, it features pork from Taiki’s “Minamoto Farm” and vegetables from Memuro’s “Namaratokachino,” packing the blessings of Tokachi into one bowl.
It looks like soup curry, but on the palate it’s unmistakably mapo. The first sip joyfully subverts expectations. You can choose your spice level, so even those sensitive to heat can enjoy it. Ingredients change with the seasons, offering new delights every visit. Do try this new-wave “Soup Mapo.”

The chef honed classic techniques in Yokohama Chinatown and Tokyo, cherishing authentic flavors.
Drawing on that experience, the restaurant offers traditional Chinese cuisine tailored to each guest’s preferences—a hallmark of this spot.
Because it’s reservation-only, share your likes and dislikes—“I’m not into meat,” “I love spicy,” etc.—and the chef will adjust seasoning for you dish by dish. That bespoke feeling—like ordering tailor-made—keeps fans coming back.
The wine list focuses on natural wines, with many options. The owner will suggest the best bottle to match your palate and the dishes—paradise for wine lovers.
Pictured is a course item: “Turnip, Scallop, and Firefly Squid Tartare.”
The menu changes daily depending on the morning’s procurement, with omakase courses only—either ¥5,500 or ¥11,000. The ¥5,500 course includes about eight dishes, while the ¥11,000 course adds roughly two more for an even more indulgent experience.

Three Recommended Spots for “Chuka Chirashi”
Obihiro has a hidden specialty called “Chuka Chirashi.” Here’s what it is, why it’s great, and three recommended places to try it.
What Is Obihiro’s Local B-Grade Gourmet “Chuka Chirashi”?
“Chuka Chirashi” is a bowl of stir-fried ingredients seasoned with a slightly sweet soy-based sauce, piled over rice like a donburi, and served with beni-shoga pickled ginger and Japanese mustard.
Unlike chirashi-zushi, it doesn’t use vinegared rice. Common ingredients include napa cabbage, wood ear mushrooms, pork, and egg; some shops add bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, or seafood like shrimp and squid. Seasoning varies widely—from simple soy and sugar to Chinese sauces and sweet-spicy profiles—part of the fun of trying different places.
History and Origins of Chuka Chirashi
It’s said to have begun in 1967 when the founder of Obihiro’s Chinese restaurant “Ajifuku” started serving a former staff meal from his ryotei days at his own shop.
It’s called “chirashi” because the colorful toppings resemble chirashi-zushi. Locals have loved it for decades.
How Is It Different from Chinese Rice Bowls with Thick Sauce?
Chuka Chirashi looks similar to a typical Chinese rice bowl, but the key difference is there’s no thick starchy sauce.
There are no strict rules for ingredients or seasoning—each shop offers its own style, from the variety of toppings to intensity and sweetness.
This diversity is a major appeal, letting you enjoy a unique taste at every restaurant you visit.
あじ福 みなみ野店
Known as the birthplace of Chuka Chirashi, “Ajifuku.”
After being featured on TV show “Himitsu no Kenmin SHOW” as the “originator of Chuka Chirashi,” it has drawn many fans.
Back in the founder’s day, the simple blend of just sugar and soy sauce defined its charm. After a generational shift, their unique oyster-sauce-based seasoning was added, layering a toasty aroma and deeper savoriness for a more complex flavor.
The shop displays a monochrome poster of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh from “Gone with the Wind,” creating a retro, nostalgic vibe.On Sundays, the tatami area fills with families right at opening.A beloved local favorite through the years.
Ajifuku’s famous Chuka Chirashi brims with colorful toppings: cucumber, bok choy, bean sprouts, napa cabbage, wood ear mushrooms, carrot, pork, shrimp, and omelet.Generous chunks of pork make it especially hearty. The fluffy, gently seasoned egg doesn’t overpower—perfectly balancing the bowl.A hint of oyster sauce adds aroma and depth, clinging to the toppings and rice for layered flavor. The rice is also intentionally “juicy,” so every bite stays savory to the end.
There’s also a “small ramen” side for just ¥500—pair it with Chuka Chirashi for maximum satisfaction. Don’t miss this combo!
