1. My Favorite Eggs

Opened in August 2025 in Tokachimura, a sightseeing hub next to Obihiro Racecourse, the café “My Favorite Eggs” is quickly becoming a new local favorite where not only tourists but also residents can enjoy a comfortable start to the day.

The star ingredient is eggs from Nakasatsunai Village, located just south of Obihiro City. One of the shop’s greatest charms is how it combines these eggs with its unique cold-smoked seasonings to create what feels like an “evolved egg dish.”

Cold smoking is a method of smoking ingredients slowly at a low temperature of about 30°C or below, which helps preserve the flavor and aroma of delicate ingredients that are sensitive to heat. Because even liquid seasonings such as soy sauce, oil, and mayonnaise can be cold-smoked, the result is a dish with layered aromas.

Cold-Smoked Seasonings Create Story-Like Enjoyment — Shin Tamago Kake Gohan

Its fluffy texture pleasantly shatters conventional ideas of “tamago kake gohan.”

The signature menu item is “Shin Tamago Kake Gohan” (800 yen). It is a bowl of freshly cooked rice topped with rich egg, enjoyed by layering flavors with cold-smoked seasonings as you eat.

【How to Enjoy Shin Tamago Kake Gohan】

  1. For the first bite, use smoked salt to bring out the egg’s sweetness
  2. For the second bite, add smoked soy sauce for a savory touch
  3. Drizzle olive oil on top for a mellow, risotto-like flavor
  4. Sharpen the taste with black pepper
  5. Finish with sesame seeds

The experience of flavors changing as you continue eating feels much like reading a story that grows more compelling with each page.

Classic Pancakes — A Plate That Fills the Morning with Gentle Happiness

Another popular menu item is the “Classic Pancake.” The softly baked pancakes are paired with the timeless combination of melting butter and maple syrup. The bold presence of egg dishes and the sweet finish offered by the pancakes both fully convey the appeal of Tokachi ingredients.

Manager Takada, who serves these dishes with the thought, “A good egg makes for a good day,” is originally from Obihiro. After working in the food industry in Tokyo, he returned home and came to appreciate the value of Tokachi ingredients all over again.

“I want children and tourists to discover the appeal of Tokachi food.” Born from that desire, “My Favorite Eggs” aims to be a place where anyone can casually stop by and enjoy a morning that feels just a little special.

2. Natural Hot Spring Hotel Kōnan

After a morning bath, you can head straight to breakfast.

“Natural Hot Spring Hotel Kōnan” is a business hotel with a public bath facility where guests can enjoy 100% free-flowing moor hot spring water direct from the source. One of the unique charms of this facility is the casual convenience of enjoying breakfast right after a morning bath. It is loved both by locals and by business travelers staying overnight.

A Gentle Breakfast Buffet Filled with Homemade Dishes

The breakfast buffet is served from 7:00 to 9:30. Despite the affordable price of 900 yen for adults, you can enjoy as much carefully prepared home-style cooking as you like.

A morning table lined with large shared dishes.

There are more than 10 large-plate dishes, including simmered dishes, dressed vegetables, and stir-fries. Including staples like natto and nori, this generous buffet lets you choose from more than 20 items. Another point of pride is the strong relationship with local farmers and the active use of Hokkaido-grown vegetables.

A little of everything you like. A breakfast made just for you.

Rather than relying on strong seasoning, each dish offers a wonderfully gentle balance of flavor. The simmered eggplant and other braised dishes in particular left a strong impression with their careful seasoning and memorable taste.

Though the flavors are home-style, it is rare to have the chance to enjoy this many dishes all at once. That may be exactly why people keep coming back here. Inside, we noticed people who looked like regular customers, as well as warm conversations between them and the staff. It truly feels like a place cherished by the local community.

Starting the day with a morning bath followed by a well-balanced meal of nourishing side dishes and rice feels like a wonderful way to begin, whether you are traveling or simply going about everyday life.

3. Fujizen

Located on the second floor of “Ichirin,” part of the Tokachi Obihiro Outside Market within the Obihiro Regional Wholesale Market, “Market Cafeteria Fujizen” is a dining spot where you can enjoy dishes made with fresh ingredients supplied directly by the market itself from early in the morning. As you feel the lively energy of the market, you can enjoy your meal in a refreshing atmosphere.

The spacious interior features table seating, raised seating areas, and counter seats facing the windows.

A Market Breakfast That Gets Busy Right After Opening

Morning service runs from 6:30 to 9:00. Options include a daily breakfast set and limited-quantity sashimi sets, making it easy to choose according to your mood and budget. There is a ticket vending machine at the entrance, and ordering is self-service. When we handed the ticket stub to a nearby staff member, the meal arrived in about five minutes. The quick market-like pace feels pleasantly efficient.

What we chose that day was the popular breakfast-only item, the “Morning Seafood Bowl.” Beautifully arranged with eight kinds of toppings such as tuna, squid, and yellowtail, it is a seafood bowl that is just as delightful to look at as it is to eat.

Morning Seafood Bowl, limited to 20 servings (800 yen). Since it is popular, arriving early is recommended.

With so many kinds of toppings, deciding which one to try first is part of the fun.

Firm, springy texture. The market’s “now” is served just as it is.

The miso soup served alongside it is no afterthought either. Filled with fish, minced fish paste, green onions, mushrooms, and more, it is a bowl where the umami of the sea and the aroma of the mountains coexist. It complements the freshness of the seafood bowl without overwhelming it, and neatly rounds out the finish.

After the meal, you can head straight down to the shops on the first floor. In addition to fresh seafood and vegetables, there are many food products made by Tokachi manufacturers, making it perfect for souvenir shopping. People working at the market and visitors enjoying sightseeing pass one another here, making it feel like a morning “crossroads of people.” It is a place where the experience does not end with eating — browsing for souvenirs is part of the fun as well.

At Fujizen, shopping after breakfast is part of the morning course.

4. Rokkatei Garden

Located along Shirakaba Street, “Rokkatei Garden” is the only Rokkatei shop in Obihiro that offers morning service.

Take your time in the morning while gazing out at the garden.

Morning service is available from 9:00 to 11:00. Through the glass-walled café, you can enjoy a view of the garden and spend a quiet morning with freshly baked bread. The atmosphere is comfortable enough for solo visitors as well, making it a pleasant place to take a morning break.

One of the charms of Rokkatei Garden’s breakfast is the freedom to combine bread, salad, coffee, and other items as you like. It can be as light or as filling as you want. Perhaps because it is so popular, the hot dog had already sold out by a little after 10 a.m. on the day we visited.

A Salad Enjoyed with the Exquisite “Hyakki Dressing”

What I ordered was a small French loaf called a coupe, along with bean soup, salad, and coffee. First, I went to get the self-service coffee and switch on my morning.

When I returned to my seat, the first thing placed on the table was the salad.

The salad (300 yen) comes with free refills. It is not self-service, so you need to ask a staff member.

With lettuce, purple cabbage, and more, it is visually colorful as well. The dressing is Rokkatei’s original “Hyakki Dressing.” It is low in acidity, with the flavors of mustard and soy sauce gently rising to bring out the sweetness of the vegetables.

In fact, I was so taken by the taste of this Hyakki Dressing that it has become a regular item in my refrigerator at home. It tastes even better the more thoroughly you shake it before pouring, so I recommend shaking it more than 20 times before eating. It is truly a “magic dressing” so good that even children who dislike vegetables end up asking for seconds of salad.

Soon after, the freshly baked coupe and bean soup arrived, and the table instantly became a “perfect breakfast scene.”

Bread, soup, salad, and coffee. The breakfast set is complete.

Crisp Outside, Chewy Inside — Coupe and Bean Soup Make a Perfect Match

The bean soup is a rich, slightly sweet tomato-based soup packed with several kinds of beans and tender meat that falls apart softly.

Ordering the soup with a coupe costs 620 yen. A better deal than ordering them separately.

Each type of bean has its own texture, alternating between soft, comforting bites and slightly firmer, more toothsome grains, so the impression changes with every mouthful. The coupe served alongside it is crisp and fragrant on the outside, while soft and chewy inside.

“Coupe,” meaning “cut” in French, is characterized by the slash called a “coupe.”

When you tear it by hand, steam rises gently and the aroma of wheat and butter softly spreads. It does not overpower, yet it has a clear presence, making it ideal for alternating with the soup.

The aroma of freshly baked bread and the light filtering through the garden create a place where you can enjoy an “unhurried morning” while refilling your coffee. Whether as the start of Tokachi sightseeing or as a small reward for yourself, breakfast at Rokkatei Garden is an experience that leaves even your mood feeling positively refreshed.

5. Hikari

About a 5-minute walk from Obihiro Station, “Teishoku no Mise Hikari,” located on the second floor of a building, is a set-meal restaurant known for two signature specialties: chicken cutlet and grilled fish.

The stairs leading up to the restaurant are a little steep, so it is best to leave large luggage at your hotel and head there light and unburdened. At the top of the stairs, a calm space awaits, with counter seats, tables, and raised tatami seating.

A Morning to Eat Exactly What You Want — Choosing Chicken Cutlet

I had planned to go with grilled fish because it was morning, but then I noticed the word “recommended” standing out on the menu. Before I knew it, my eyes had drifted to the chicken cutlet. I remembered the strong reviews I had read beforehand and changed my plan. Sometimes it feels right to fill up on fried food in the morning. There should be mornings when you simply eat what you really want.

After much deliberation, I chose the restaurant’s signature item: the chicken cutlet set meal.

The chicken cutlet that arrived was beautifully seasoned with pepper. The flavor was so well developed that it hardly needed sauce at all, and it made the rice go quickly.

Since there are three pieces, it is nice that you can change the flavor as you go by adding Japanese mustard or pouring on sauce. Even with the same fried dish, you get to enjoy different expressions along the way.

The coating is crisp and light, while the inside is moist and tender.

The accompanying side dishes are just as carefully prepared. On this day, they were kiriboshi daikon seasoned with dashi and a dressed spinach-and-chicken dish. Both were made with such care that even without the main dish, the side bowls and rice alone would have felt satisfying.

Gentle-flavored supporting dishes with a quiet but unmistakable presence.

Plenty of Set Meals Perfect for the Morning

Morning service is available from Tuesday to Saturday. From Tuesday to Friday, it is open from 8:00 to 9:00, and on Saturdays and public holidays from 8:30 until midday, so you can enjoy a solid set meal from the start of the day.

The “Morning Set Meal” (700 yen), available Tuesday through Friday only, includes two small side dishes, a generous serving of natto, rice, miso soup, and pickles. It is a simple yet deeply comforting combination that sets the tone for the day. In fact, it was memorable to see a woman dining alone choose this very breakfast set.

Alongside chicken cutlet, the other star is grilled fish.

Of course, the grilled fish set meal, also highlighted in the shop’s name, remains a firm favorite. Choices include saury, mackerel, and salmon belly, so fish lovers are sure to be satisfied as well. This time, the chicken cutlet stole my heart, but next time it will be grilled fish — it is the kind of place that naturally gives you a reason to return.

6. Mugine

Masuya Pan (Masuya Shoten), a long-established bakery with locations across Tokachi centered around Obihiro, has been beloved in the region for its bread made with 100% Tokachi-grown wheat since its founding in 1950.

Among its shops, the flagship is “Mugine,” known as the largest bakery in Japan. Its grounds cover about 11,000 square meters, nearly approaching the size of the Tokyo Dome field.

The sight of around 100 kinds of bread lined up at all times is truly spectacular. Surrounded by the aroma of freshly baked bread, even the time spent choosing what to eat becomes part of the joy. Since it opens as early as 6:55 a.m., it is also perfect for dropping by quickly to pick up something for an early-morning drive.

Beloved by Locals: “Shiro Spa Sandwich” × “Twist Donut”

Among the wide lineup, the first item you should pick up is the long-loved signature product, the “Shiro Spa Sandwich” (245 yen).

If you are unsure, start here. One sandwich with an addictive mustard-mayo finish that leaves you satisfied.

It is made by combining spaghetti and mixed vegetables with a secret mustard mayonnaise, then sandwiching them between slices of jukuryoku shokupan bread. The aroma of mustard mayo rises gently, then melts together with the sweetness of the vegetables in your mouth. By the time you finish one slice, you will likely find yourself wanting the next bite already.

A classic donut you will want to bring home as a morning treat too.

Another item not to miss is the “Twist Donut – Cinnamon” (120 yen). Its twisted dough creates a pleasantly chewy texture, layered with the sweet aroma of cinnamon, giving it a simple yet lingering deliciousness. Take a bite in your hand and the gentle sweetness of the dough spreads through your mouth. It pairs beautifully with both coffee and milk, making it a reliable companion for the morning.

Terrace seating with views over the Tokachi landscape

Another attraction is the eat-in space both inside and outside the shop, where you can enjoy your bread right after buying it. Picnic sheets are also available to borrow, so on sunny days you can enjoy a picnic-like mood without bringing anything yourself.

Mugine makes it possible to spend breakfast time breathing in the aroma of freshly baked bread and gazing out over the Tokachi scenery as you take each bite.
