What kind of place is Tokachi Ecology Park?
One of Tokachi’s largest parks, boasting a vast site about the size of 30 Tokyo Domes!
Tokachi Ecology Park, commonly known as “Ecopa,” opened in April 2006 (Heisei 18) as an environmentally focused park designed to cultivate forests and promote rich coexistence between nature and people.
One of its biggest highlights is its scale. Spanning three areas—Otofuke Town, Ikeda Town, and Makubetsu Town—the total site area is about 140.9 hectares. That’s roughly 30 Tokyo Domes in size.
If you actually walk through the park, with few obstacles to block your view, you’ll truly feel just how expansive it is. Open views continue along the Tokachi River, and it feels less like a “park” and more like stepping into Tokachi’s nature itself.
About 20 minutes by car from central Obihiro—an easy stop during your sightseeing route
The location is also excellent: about 40 minutes by car from Obihiro Airport, and about 20 minutes from the Obihiro-Otofuke Airport IC.
It’s also easy to access from the Makubetsu area and fits naturally into Tokachi sightseeing routes.
Because you can stop by without straying far from the city, it’s also recommended for those who want to feel Tokachi’s nature—but don’t want to add extra travel time.
Closed only during New Year’s holidays. Admission is free, too!
Ecopa closes only from December 29 to January 3. Opening hours are 9:00–17:00.
Another reason it’s such an easy stop during your trip is that you can visit any time outside the New Year holidays—and there’s no admission fee.
With its vast nature, great access, and user-friendly facilities, Tokachi Ecology Park is, in short, a spot that’s absolutely “worth stopping by.”
So, how can you play and spend your time in the park? From the next section, we’ll introduce Ecopa’s facilities and playground equipment in detail.
Packed with play and learning—Ecopa’s facilities and playgrounds
Start at the Visitor Center and explore the park efficiently
Begin your Ecopa stroll at the “Visitor Center”, known for its striking arched roof!
The Visitor Center serves as the park’s management building and provides various information, including how to enjoy the park and how to check in for accommodations (camp sites and cottages). Gather info here first, then find the best way to spend your time.
Inside the center you’ll find an “Indoor Garden” where you can relax with building blocks or reading, plus a nursing room. At “Ecopa Café,” you can enjoy soft-serve ice cream, coffee, and light meals. Soft-serve tasted in this open, airy space is something special! Its cool, rich sweetness will soothe your travel fatigue.
Now, let’s take a look at the facilities and playgrounds inside the park.
Full of Tokachi-style highlights and dynamic ways to play!
Let’s start with play facilities!
⚫︎Everyone’s favorite “Fuwafuwa Dome”: Free
When it comes to Ecopa’s signature playground equipment, it’s the “Fuwafuwa Dome.”
A white trampoline dome shaped like a small hill is set up here, and both children and adults can enjoy bouncing around. It’s said to be the park’s most popular attraction by far. Use is free of charge.

⚫︎Kids’ delight: “Water and Mist Playground”: Free
This play area features fountains and mist—hugely popular with kids. In summer, it’s the perfect break spot! According to one of our editors who lives in Otofuke, it’s “the best place to wear kids out.” Parents who want their kids to fall asleep early so they can relax at night should definitely check this out.Don’t forget a change of clothes!

⚫︎Perfect for a break: “Picnic Plaza”: Free
Spread out a sheet for lunch—or lie down and stretch out fully. It’s a beautiful spot of lawn and greenery, perfect for resting tired eyes and body after driving.
The park also lends out playground equipment depending on the season. Since available equipment differs between summer and winter, you can enjoy a different experience depending on when you visit.
⚫︎Summer equipment ① Ride around the park: “Bicycle Rental”: Paid
You can rent standard bikes, as well as mountain bikes, bikes with training wheels, children’s bikes, and even tandem bikes for two.
Please check the “Paid” link for pricing details.
⚫︎Summer equipment ② Easy getting around: “Cart Tour of the Park”: Paid
This activity lets you ride a cart driven by a guide and tour the park in about 10–15 minutes. The minimum group size is 4 people (1 adult + 3 children) or 3 people (3 adults), making it a great option for family trips.
⚫︎Winter equipment ① Thrilling fun: “Snow Tube”: Paid
Snow tubing is a ride where you sit on a special “tube” (like an inner tube) and slide down snowy slopes at speed. You can choose between a single-child tube or a two-person parent-and-child tube.
Kids are guaranteed to cheer with excitement!
⚫︎Winter equipment ② For speed lovers: “Snow Raft”: Paid
“Snow rafting” is when a snowmobile pulls an inflatable raft with people onboard. It splashes up snow as it races across the surface—so fast it can swing you around! A must-try for anyone who loves thrilling speed.
⚫︎Winter equipment ③ An elegant stroll along park paths: “Cross-Country Skiing”: Paid
Put on skis and glide along winter trails. You can enjoy Tokachi’s beautiful snowy landscapes at your own pace.
⚫︎Winter equipment ④ Experience Tokachi’s winter nature: “Snowshoeing”: Paid
Snowshoes let you walk without sinking into freshly fallen, fluffy snow. Stroll through snowy fields and hills and discover winter-only animal tracks and scenery.
⚫︎Winter equipment ⑤ Even adults want a turn: “Ice Slide”: Free
A slippery slide carved into a frozen slope that appears only in winter! Children and adults alike can enjoy it casually for free.
Facilities where you can learn about Hokkaido and Tokachi’s nature
There are also facilities where you can feel closer to the creatures that live in Hokkaido.
⚫︎Learning facility ① Wrapped in Tokachi’s nature: “Oike (Large Pond)”
“Oike,” located within the park, is one of the areas where waterside creatures gather. Walking paths are well maintained, so you can enjoy the waterside scenery, listen to birds, and spend time surrounded by nature.
⚫︎Learning facility ② Watch salmon run upstream! “Toto Road”
“Toto Road” in the Makubetsu area is a facility where you can observe salmon swimming upstream in the Tokachi River from a viewpoint at the riverbed. In the glass-walled viewing space, you can feel nature’s activity up close.
Event information held at Tokachi Ecology Park
Tokachi Ecology Park hosts seasonal events throughout the year.
Spring events
Centered around Golden Week, this is a season rich in hands-on events. Outdoor activities and craft experiences let you feel Tokachi’s nature with your whole body after winter ends.
Summer events
Large-scale events for children are held, such as the “Wakuwaku Kids Festa,” where the park becomes lively with big inflatable play equipment, food carts, and activity booths.
Autumn events
Autumn features mainly craft experiences and outdoor events. In comfortable weather, you can enjoy a relaxed time alongside a stroll. There are even tours to search for small animals in the forest!
Winter events
In winter, snow-country fun takes center stage—such as “Winter Fest in Ecopa,” where you can enjoy snow tubing and snowshoeing, as well as activities like the “Snowman Contest.”

In addition to seasonal events, there are also regular happenings such as the “Ecopa Soba Festival” held a few times a year, and “Kuni-san’s Song Plaza,” led by singer-songwriter Kuni Kawauchi, who has also appeared on NHK’s “Minna no Uta” (if you catch it, you’re lucky!).
Many events draw local residents as well, so even as a tourist, you can experience Tokachi’s everyday life—another big appeal. If the dates align, it’s worth weaving an event into your travel schedule.
